What to Feed Red Wigglers: The Complete Feeding Guide for Your Worm Bin
New worm bin owners almost universally make the same mistake in the first two weeks: they overfeed. The bin smells bad, the worms climb the walls, and the conclusion is that vermicomposting is harder than it looked. The actual problem is almost always too much food, not the wrong food.
Understanding what red wigglers eat, how much they can process, and what they genuinely cannot handle gives you the foundation for a bin that runs smoothly for years.
How Red Wigglers Actually Eat
Red wigglers do not have teeth. They ingest organic material along with the microbes that are breaking it down. The actual digestion happens when the material passes through their gizzard (which uses grit to grind food) and their gut, where beneficial microbes do the chemical conversion work.
This means that food which has begun to decompose is actually easier for worms to process than fresh material. Slightly wilted vegetables, coffee grounds that have been sitting a day, bruised fruit, these are all more appealing to worms than fresh, intact food. This is why burying food and letting it sit briefly before the worms reach it produces better results than placing fresh material directly on the surface.
Worms also need grit to process food. Add a small handful of coarse sand, finely crushed eggshells, or garden soil to new bins and every few weeks thereafter.
What Red Wigglers Eat Enthusiastically
The following foods are processed quickly, rarely cause problems, and form the core of a well-fed worm bin:
Fruit and vegetable scraps of almost any kind. Peels, cores, trimmings, overripe fruit, wilted greens, squash, cucumber, peppers, carrot tops, berry stems, melon rinds. Worms process all of it. Chop or break larger pieces so the surface area is higher and breakdown begins faster.
Coffee grounds are among the most enthusiastically consumed foods in a worm bin. They have an ideal carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, provide grit, and the microbes present in spent grounds are well-suited to the bin environment. Paper coffee filters can go in with the grounds. You can feed significant quantities of coffee grounds without issue, though a ratio of no more than about one quarter of total feeding volume by weight keeps the pH from dropping too low over time.
Tea leaves and tea bags process quickly. Remove any staples from tea bags before adding them.
Shredded cardboard and paper serve as both food and bedding. Corrugated cardboard with the outer paper layer torn off to expose the corrugation breaks down faster. Newspaper in black ink, not glossy inserts, shreds well and adds carbon to balance nitrogen-heavy kitchen scraps. This is the material you should add whenever the bin seems too wet or starts to show any smell.
Aged herbivore manure. Chicken manure that has been composted for three to four weeks, rabbit manure, horse manure, goat manure. All of these are highly appealing to red wigglers and provide the nitrogen density they thrive on. Fresh chicken manure generates heat as it breaks down and can kill worms if added in large amounts. Always use aged or partially composted manure.
Crushed eggshells provide calcium, grit, and help buffer pH. Rinse them, dry them briefly, and crush coarsely before adding. Do not grind to a fine powder; coarser grit does more work in the worm’s gizzard.
Grass clippings and garden waste. Fresh grass clippings are high nitrogen and should be added in thin layers to prevent matting and overheating. Wilted, partially dried garden waste breaks down more evenly. Leaves, shredded, add carbon and bulk.
What Red Wigglers Will Eat But Slowly
These foods are not harmful but decompose more slowly or require more careful management:
Cooked vegetables and plain pasta or rice. Worms will process them, but cooked starchy foods attract pests more readily than raw scraps. Bury them deep in the bedding and add in small amounts.
Citrus peels decompose slowly and their acidity can lower bin pH if added in large quantities. A lemon half here and there is fine. A week’s worth of citrus from a household that drinks a lot of juice is too much at once. Add citrus peel gradually and monitor whether your worms are avoiding that area of the bin.
Onion and garlic. Worms actively avoid these due to the sulfur compounds they contain. Small amounts that end up mixed with other scraps usually get processed eventually, but large additions will push worms to the opposite side of the bin.
Spicy peppers. The capsaicin that makes peppers hot is irritating to worms. Small amounts buried well in mixed scraps are fine. Large additions of hot peppers are not.
What Never Goes in the Worm Bin
Some foods create conditions that harm or kill worms, attract serious pests, or introduce pathogens that make the castings unsafe for food gardens:
Meat, fish, and poultry decompose anaerobically in a worm bin, producing hydrogen sulfide and ammonia. The smell is severe and essentially impossible to manage through normal bin adjustment. These materials also attract rodents, flies, and other pests that a well-run bin typically avoids. There are no exceptions here.
Dairy products. Cheese, yogurt, butter, milk, and any dairy-based food cause the same anaerobic problems as meat. Even small amounts of dairy can take a bin weeks to recover from.
Oily and greasy foods. Oil coats the worms’ skin, which is how they absorb oxygen, and impairs their ability to breathe. Even small amounts of oil-soaked food, salad dressing residue on a plate, cooking oil poured into the bin, can stress a worm population noticeably.
Salty foods. Salt dehydrates worms by drawing moisture through osmosis. Heavily seasoned food scraps, chips, pretzels, heavily salted restaurant leftovers, should not go in the bin.
Pet waste. Cat and dog feces contain pathogens including Toxoplasma and various bacteria that are not reliably destroyed in a home vermicomposting system. Using castings from a bin that processed pet waste on a vegetable garden is a food safety risk.
Chemically treated plants. If you have recently treated your lawn or garden with pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers, do not add those plant materials to the bin. The residues can harm worms and may survive into the finished castings.
How Often and How Much to Feed
This is where the most important guidance lives: feed less than you think you need to.
A pound of red wigglers processes three to four pounds of food per week under ideal conditions. In a new bin where the population is still settling, the processing rate is lower. In a mature bin with a large, healthy population, it can be higher.
A practical approach for the first three months: feed every five to seven days. Add only what the worms have processed since the last feeding. If food from the previous feeding is still clearly visible and unprocessed, do not add more yet. Wait another few days.
Burying food rather than placing it on the surface improves processing speed. It also prevents fruit flies from reaching exposed material and keeps the surface cooler.
Vary the foods you add. A bin fed exclusively coffee grounds will develop an acid problem over time. A bin fed exclusively wet fruit scraps will become too wet. The most stable bins receive a mix of greens (wet, nitrogen-rich materials) and browns (dry, carbon-rich materials like cardboard and paper) in roughly equal proportions by weight.
Signs You Are Feeding Correctly
A well-fed bin is easy to identify: the food disappears within three to five days, the worms stay active in the top several inches of bedding, and the bin has a smell like fresh soil or forest floor, earthy but pleasant.
Signs you are overfeeding: persistent bad smell, worms clustering near the bin surface or lid, visible pools of liquid at the bottom, food that remains unprocessed for a week or more.
Signs you are underfeeding: the bedding looks dark and uniform (which actually means the bin is in great shape and ready to harvest), worms that are smaller than they should be, or a population that does not grow over several months.
Building a Feed System That Works
The most sustainable approach is to keep a small kitchen collection container with a lid, typically a one-gallon container with a carbon filter lid that reduces odors, on your counter. When it fills up, take it to the bin, add it, and cover with a layer of torn cardboard. This naturally produces a ratio of scraps to carbon that keeps the bin balanced without measuring anything.

Coconut coir bricks kept near the bin make it easy to add carbon whenever you add a wet feeding. One small handful of expanded coir per feeding keeps moisture levels balanced.
Feeding Worms in a Chicken Homestead
If you raise chickens, you have a particularly efficient feeding loop available. Chicken manure aged three to four weeks in a pile or dedicated composting area becomes some of the best food you can give red wigglers. The worms process it faster than almost any other material, and the castings produced from chicken manure are particularly nitrogen-rich.
The loop that works on our homestead: kitchen scraps and garden waste go to the chickens first. What the chickens do not eat goes into the compost pile along with bedding and manure. After three to four weeks, that pre-composted material goes to the worm bin. The finished castings go back to the garden. The garden produces vegetables that feed the household and the chickens. Very little organic material leaves the system.
