Chicken Molting: What It Is, What to Expect, and How to Help Your Hens

Every fall, flock owners open the coop door to find what looks like a crime scene: feathers everywhere, hens looking patchy and uncomfortable, and egg production dropping off a cliff. If you did not know about molt before this moment, it is alarming. If you did know, it is just fall.

Molting is the annual feather replacement cycle that every laying hen goes through, typically starting in the fall of her second year and every year afterward. Understanding what is happening biologically, what you will see, how long it lasts, and what you can do to support your hens through it changes how you experience fall flock management.

What Happens During Molt

Feathers are made primarily of protein, specifically keratin. Producing a full set of feathers requires substantial nutritional resources. The hen’s body cannot simultaneously produce eggs at full rate and grow a complete new set of feathers, so during molt the reproductive system essentially pauses while feather replacement happens.

The trigger for molt in most backyard flocks is the decreasing daylight of late summer and fall. As days shorten, hormone levels shift, the ovaries reduce activity, and feather follicles receive the signal to shed and regrow. This is why molt and the reduction in winter laying often overlap: both respond to the same photoperiod change.

The sequence of feather loss generally follows a pattern: head and neck first, then back and breast, then wings, then tail. In fast-molting hens, this happens rapidly, and a hen that looked fine last week may look genuinely alarming within two weeks: naked neck, bare patches on back, drooping tail. In slow-molting hens, the process is gradual enough you may barely notice.

New feathers emerge as pinfeathers, encased in a blood-filled sheath. At this stage, the feathers are painful to touch because blood vessels are active within the shaft. Handle molting hens carefully and minimize picking them up during active molt. The pinfeathers harden and the blood supply retracts as the feather matures.

How Long Molt Lasts

The range is wide: 8 to 16 weeks for most hens, with production breeds on the shorter end and heritage breeds on the longer end.

Fast molters lose feathers quickly, look temporarily terrible, and return to laying faster. Slow molters lose feathers gradually, look less disheveled, but take longer to complete the cycle.

Within any breed, individual variation is significant. Two hens of the same breed and age can have noticeably different molt durations. Genetics controls molting speed more than management does.

What to Expect in Terms of Egg Production

Production during molt ranges from significantly reduced to completely stopped, depending on the hen and breed.

Fast-molting hens often stop laying almost completely during active molt, then return to full production quickly after feathers regrow. Slow-molting hens may maintain reduced production throughout a longer molt rather than stopping and restarting.

A hen that completes molt but is not yet laying may be waiting for daylight to increase before her reproductive system restarts. The fall molt that begins in September or October often completes by December, but with winter’s short days, many hens do not resume laying until January or February when daylight begins increasing toward 12 hours.

After molt, most hens lay better than they did before. The reproductive system has rested and recalibrated. Eggs after the first molt typically have stronger shells and better production consistency.

How to Support Molting Hens

The most effective thing you can do during molt is increase dietary protein.

Feathers are 85 percent protein. Growing a complete new set requires substantially more protein than normal maintenance. Layer feed provides 15 to 18 percent protein, calibrated for egg production. During molt, the hen needs more protein and less calcium since she is not making shells.

Switch to a higher-protein feed during molt. Flock raiser feed with 18 to 20 percent protein and lower calcium than layer feed is appropriate during this period. Return to layer feed when hens resume laying. Do not add oyster shell during flock raiser feeding if no hens are laying, since the calcium is unnecessary and can cause kidney stress.

Supplement with high-protein treats. Dried mealworms are 50 to 55 percent protein. Black oil sunflower seeds are 15 percent protein with healthy fats that support feather condition. Scrambled eggs provide complete protein. Keep total treat volume within the 10 percent of diet guideline even during molt.

Avoid handling molting hens more than necessary. The pinfeather stage is genuinely painful. Necessary handling should be gentle and minimal.

Ensure adequate space and low-stress conditions. Crowded conditions during molt increase the risk of feather pecking, where hens target the exposed skin of molting flock members. If you see feather pecking, separate the affected hen and increase space.

Should You Use Artificial Lighting During Molt

Running lights year-round prevents the natural molt trigger and keeps hens in continuous production. The result is higher total annual egg count in the short term. In reality, hens on continuous artificial lighting still replace feathers over time, but gradually and continuously rather than in a concentrated annual cycle.

The practical consequence observed by experienced flock keepers over many years is that hens kept under continuous lighting tend to experience a steeper production decline and shorter productive life compared to hens that cycle through annual molts naturally.

Many experienced homesteaders accept the fall production interruption and allow natural molt, then add lighting from November through February to encourage winter laying after molt is complete. This provides winter eggs without completely eliminating the restorative molt cycle.

Watching the Comb: The Most Reliable Laying Predictor

A molting hen with a pale, shrunken comb is not ready to lay regardless of how her feathers look. A bright red, full comb means eggs are imminent, usually within one to two weeks of the comb reddening.

Watch the comb rather than the feathers for predicting when production will resume. It is the most reliable visible indicator of reproductive status.
