The price, typically $175 to $200, puts it out of range for many beginners. It also requires a larger initial worm population, around two pounds, to process food at a rate that prevents overloading while the population builds.

One practical note: the Hungry Bin’s open top requires more attention to coverage in warm weather. Fruit flies reach exposed food more easily than in a lidded tray system. Keeping food covered with a layer of cardboard or burlap eliminates this.
