DIY Garden Tool Storage: Rack Plans for the Homestead Workshop

A homestead that keeps tools organized works faster than one that spends time looking for the right hoe or realizing a tool was left in the rain. Proper tool storage also extends tool life: wooden handles rot faster when tools are stored on damp ground, metal edges rust when they sit in contact with soil residue and moisture, and digging tools with cracked or damaged handles cause injuries.

These three rack designs cover the most common storage situations: a simple wall-mounted horizontal rack for long-handled tools, a vertical slot rack for heavier digging tools, and an integrated wall organizer for a dedicated shed or barn wall.

Design 1: Simple Horizontal Peg Rack (1 Hour Build)

The simplest effective tool storage for long-handled tools like rakes, hoes, and brooms is horizontal dowel pegs mounted on a board attached to a wall. Tools hang on the pegs by their handles, keeping them off the floor, out of contact with ground moisture, and organized in a visible row.

Materials:

  • (1) 1x6x6-foot board (cedar or pine, painted for outdoor use)
  • (8 to 12) 1/2-inch hardwood dowels, 6 inches long
  • Wood glue
  • Exterior paint or sealer
  • (4) 2.5-inch exterior screws for wall attachment

Build:

Drill 1/2-inch diameter holes at 6-inch intervals along the center of the board, angled slightly upward (about 15 degrees from horizontal) so tools do not slide off.

Apply wood glue to each dowel hole and insert the dowels, leaving 4 to 5 inches protruding from the board. Wipe excess glue. Allow to cure 24 hours.

Paint or seal the board. Mount it to the wall studs (or directly to a shed wall if the wall is sturdy) with 2.5-inch screws, positioned at a height where the tallest tool handles can hang comfortably without touching the floor.

Variations:

Two rows of pegs at different heights handle tools of different lengths simultaneously.

PVC pipe cut at angles and mounted with U-bolts creates a more secure tool holder that fully supports the handle rather than just one contact point.

Design 2: Vertical Slot Rack for Heavy Digging Tools (Half-Day Build)

Heavy digging tools (shovels, spades, forks, mattocks) are awkward to hang on simple pegs and often fall off when the handle is heavy relative to the hanging contact point. A vertical slot rack holds these tools blade-up (or blade-down in a floor-standing version), gripping the handle in a slot at the appropriate height.

Wall-mounted version (tools blade-down, slots at handle height):

Two 2×4 boards mounted horizontally on the wall, parallel to each other, spaced 12 inches apart, with 2-inch wide slots cut at 4-inch intervals create individual channels for each tool handle. Tools slip handle-first into the slot and rest against the lower board, held in place by the slot walls.

Cut the slots with a jigsaw: make two parallel cuts 2 inches apart to the desired depth, then clear the material between them with a chisel or additional jigsaw cuts.

Mount the slotted boards to the wall at the appropriate height for the handles of your typical digging tools. Position the lower board at a height where the tool head does not touch the floor when the handle is in the slot.

Floor-standing version (tools standing blade-up):

Two 2x4s mounted to a base, with slots cut at intervals to hold tool handles upright. The base is a 2×6 or wider board, weighted by the tools themselves once loaded. This version is freestanding and does not require wall attachment, which makes it useful in structures where wall attachment is not practical.

Design 3: Integrated Shed Wall Organizer (Weekend Project)

A full shed wall organizer uses horizontal slotted panels (similar to French cleats used in shop woodworking) from which custom tool holders can hang and be rearranged as your tool collection changes.

French cleat system:

French cleats are strips of lumber ripped at a 45-degree bevel angle. One strip is mounted to the wall with the bevel pointing up and out. A matching strip on the back of a tool holder (bevel pointing down and in) hooks over the wall strip. Any number of holders can slide along the cleat and be repositioned without tools.

Rip 3/4-inch plywood or 1×6 boards at a 45-degree bevel. Mount horizontal rows of cleats across the entire wall at 6-inch vertical spacing. Build custom hooks, holders, and shelves with matching 45-degree cleats on the back. The result is a completely customizable wall system where every holder can be repositioned instantly.

Materials for a 4×8-foot French cleat wall:

  • (2) sheets 3/4-inch plywood, ripped into 3-inch wide strips at 45 degrees (or purchase pre-ripped cleat strips)
  • (1) sheet 3/4-inch plywood for building hooks and holders
  • (1 lb) 2.5-inch exterior screws for mounting cleats to wall studs
  • (24) small 1.5-inch screws for assembling holders

Mounting: Find wall studs and drive 2.5-inch screws through the cleats into studs at every available stud. Cleats that are not attached to studs will pull out under heavy tool weight.

Building holders: Simple L-brackets made from scrap plywood, with a matching 45-degree cleat on the back, create customizable hooks. Drill holes for tools with round handles. Use short lengths of PVC pipe attached to a cleat-backed board to create round holders for tool handles of specific diameters.

General Tool Storage Principles

Keep metal off the ground. Any metal tool left in contact with damp soil develops rust faster. Even concrete floors transmit moisture. Hanging tools or storing them on rubber feet prevents direct moisture contact.

Store wooden handles dry. Wooden tool handles left in contact with soil rot from the handle end. Oil wooden handles once or twice a year with linseed oil or tung oil to prevent drying and cracking.

Orient tool blades consistently. Store cutting tools with blades facing inward or in a position where reaching past them to a neighboring tool does not create a cut hazard.

Label or paint-code stored tools. Color-coded handle tape or a painted stripe at the handle end makes it instantly obvious when a tool is missing from its designated spot. This matters most in homestead operations where multiple people use the same tools.
